Answers to the question, "What is a family?" are often based on subjective experiences or thoughts, or conversely, on the idealized image of family inherent within us. This textbook begins by covering concepts and theories that enable a comprehensive understanding of the family. Theories of family development provide a useful framework for understanding that the family is a changing entity surrounded by various social contexts. Furthermore, to examine how the family has developed from a historical perspective, we closely trace its evolution from primitive families to postmodern families. In the section on family life and development, we study normative and predictable family changes that occur according to qualitative stages throughout the family's life course, while the section on life events examines how families adapt to sudden changes, such as divorce. Finally, we explore the impact of various social institutions surrounding the family—namely, work, community, and migration—on the family. As such, please keep in mind that while the course *Family Development* covers a somewhat broad range of topics and content regarding the family, its focus is always on understanding the dynamics and diversity of the family.
