Let's see what biochemistry is
Park Ji-ho et al.: Environmental Biochemistry (26-1 semester, workbook included)
Biochemistry is a discipline that aims to explain and understand the structure, tissues, and functions of living organisms from a molecular perspective. In other words, the main research tasks include identifying the characteristics of the small molecules that constitute living organisms and the macromolecules formed by their chemical bonding, investigating how cells, tissues, and organs are generated from these macromolecules, and understanding biological metabolism—the series of chemical reactions related to the maintenance of life. Since biochemistry originated from organic chemistry, basic knowledge of organic chemistry is necessary for efficient learning. Therefore, Chapters 1 through 5 of this book cover the classification and properties of organic compounds, which are the most fundamental yet important topics in the field of organic chemistry. Chapters 6 through 8 describe cells, the properties of water as a biological solvent, and the composition and characteristics of biological macromolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Finally, Chapter 9 covers the metabolism of biological substances necessary for maintaining life phenomena, focusing on glucose metabolism. It is hoped that studying *Environmental Biochemistry* will aid in understanding the advanced content and applied fields of biochemistry in the future.
