Lee Eun-taek et al.: New Media Theory (26-1 semester, workbook included)
This book focuses on new media technologies, which already play a pivotal role in modern society, covering their emergence, social impact, and recent development trends. While previous mass media possessed characteristics such as universality, dispersion, simultaneity, unidirectionality, and concentration, new media features enhanced interactivity to an incomparable degree, as well as increased non-simultaneity and audience selectivity. Through this book, readers will gain knowledge regarding the introduction of new media, related theories, and recent development trends. Realistically, writing a textbook on new media is a very challenging task. This is because the reality is that today's new media will become tomorrow's old media. Therefore, it is necessary to familiarize oneself with the basic theories and issues required to understand new media, and to make an effort to understand newly emerging media within that framework. As McLuhan insightfully observed, media constantly evolves and seeks change. This book consists of 12 chapters. Chapters 1 through 5 cover theoretical content for understanding new media and the information society, while Chapters 6 through 12 address the development trends and current status of each type of new media in more detail.
