A monumental introduction to medieval aesthetics by the foremost scholar of medieval studies. The writing is so refined and the content so complete that it is hard to believe it was written in the author's twenties.
Eco's book is difficult as expected, but once you get past the beginning, it is a book that offers a delightful take on medieval aesthetics.
Recognized as Eco's first work, it is the first in the Mania Collection. Along with an excellent translation, it is very enjoyable and informative, featuring Eco's unique wit evident throughout the scholarly writings and his insights as a master of medieval studies and an expert on ancient manuscripts. I can only express my gratitude to the publisher and the translator.
Umberto Eco: Medieval aesthetics
The *Umberto Eco Mania Collection* contains most of Eco's works published over a period of about 50 years, excluding his novels and children's books, covering philosophy, semiotics, literary theory, cultural criticism, and columns. Through persistent tracking across Italy and the United States, this collection has even revived books that were out of print and unavailable in Italy. Umberto Eco, who is arguably one of the most influential thinkers of our time, is a passionate writer who began his work at the age of 24 and continues to write to this day at the age of 77. His masterpiece, *The Name of the Rose*, has been translated into over 40 languages, and he has received honorary doctorates from more than 30 universities worldwide. He is also a recognized scholar in academia, having lectured at institutions such as Harvard University and Cambridge University. Volume 1, *The Aesthetics of the Middle Ages*, is a theoretical treatise on medieval aesthetics that heralded the arrival of Eco as an outstanding medieval scholar. In this book, the young Eco, at the age of 26, explores the relationship between medieval cultural theory, artistic experience, and artistic practice, synthesizing the theories of medieval aesthetics that had previously been separated, such as theology and science, and poetry and mysticism.
