Description

The revised textbook for *Traditional Society and Living Culture*, a course in the Department of Liberal Arts and Culture, is divided into five sections—economic life, clothing, food, and shelter; community life; life by social class; and ritual life—comprising a total of 15 chapters with three chapters per section. In the section on economic life, agricultural life, fishing and the lives of fishermen, and market life were selected. Notably, fishing and the lives of fishermen are covered for the first time in a textbook, which is significant given that Korea is surrounded by sea on three sides. However, other diverse aspects of economic life were not covered. In the section on clothing, food, and shelter, the division into three parts—clothing, traditional society and food, and housing—outwardly aligns best with the nature of the section. However, there is a limitation in that the actual content does not cover the comprehensive realities of each section. Community life is divided into three parts: villages, mutual aid societies (gye), diverse aspects within the common market (minjang), and education and the civil service examination. In the section on life by social class, the lives of bureaucrats and the gentry (yangban), women's marriage, love, and work, and slaves (nobi) were selected. The section on ritual life covers childbirth and marriage, funerals and ancestral rites, village rituals, and household beliefs. Fundamentally, by examining the rites of passage (coming-of-age, marriage, funerals, and ancestral rites) and village rituals, it is considered to comprehensively encompass ritual life. While the narrative style varies slightly by topic, overall, the focus has been on the late Joseon period to faithfully capture the life and culture of this era. It will be helpful in understanding Korea's precious 'traditional culture' from the pre-modern era.
