Description

This course was established to cultivate an eye for systematically examining Korean traditional culture, particularly its tangible artifacts and historical sites. The textbook is broadly divided into two sections: "Historical Sites" and "Artifacts." Historical sites refer to heritage that stands on-site and remains firmly preserved, whereas artifacts can be defined as heritage that, while present on-site, is movable or has been moved to museums and exhibition halls for safekeeping. The "Historical Sites" section consists of seven lectures covering palaces, Jongmyo Shrine and Sajik Altar, Hyanggyo and Seowon Confucian academies, Buddhist temples, residential architecture, fortresses, and royal tombs and burial mounds. Compared to the previous textbook, prehistoric sites and stone art have been removed, while Jongmyo Shrine and Sajik Altar have been added. The "Artifacts" section comprises eight lectures: Joseon Confucian culture, Joseon royal culture, painting, scientific cultural heritage, epigraphy, Buddhist sculpture, weapons, and pottery and porcelain. While ancient maps and ancient books have been excluded, Joseon Confucian culture, Joseon royal culture, and weapons have been added. The content of the other sections has also been significantly rewritten. This textbook contains the historical significance of each field, along with its basic structure, artistry, and technical aspects, so it is expected to be of great help in visiting and understanding historical artifacts and sites in the future.
