Description

A "site" refers to a place where an event is actually taking place or has taken place. While history is already implicitly present in the phrase "where it happened," the weight of time becomes even greater when we speak of a "historical site." Human history dates back tens or hundreds of millions of years, and since thousands of years have passed since the establishment of nations alone, every region of this land becomes a site of at least thousands of years of history. This means that history is layered upon layer in every region. Because there were periods of long periods of stagnation and slow change, as well as times of rapid transformation like the modern era, the depth of this history is indescribable. Looking into historical sites is an excellent way to interpret and learn history. However, we cannot visit all the numerous and diverse historical sites. Nevertheless, the history taught by these sites is invaluable because we can understand countless similar sites through a single outstanding one, and learn various things by comparing them with different ones. Through this, sites help us understand history broadly and deeply. This book was designed to allow the general public to seek out and enjoy historical sites. The act of seeking out historical sites is referred to as a historical tour or field trip. Field trips require time, effort, and especially legwork, from preparation to the actual visit. While there are many well-known sites, there are also quite a few that remain undiscovered by the general public. Depending on one's purpose and focus, even ordinary places can feel like historical sites. I hope you enjoy the diverse sites presented through fifteen themes in this book.

This is the first university textbook I've ever seen like this. Especially since it's a textbook for the Korea Open University! Learning history in the field is the most memorable way.
