Conversely, the system is a domain where behavior is coordinated through non-verbal media such as money and power; it rejects ethics and pursues only purposive rationality (instrumental rationality). Based on this distinction, the book points out the pathological phenomena of modern society that arise when the logic of the system invades and colonizes the lifeworld. It systematically incorporates the history of sociological theory ranging from Marx, Bebe, Durkheim, Mead, and Parsons, and comprehensively covers modern social theories ranging from cognitive psychology to linguistic theory, behavioral theory, and literary anthropology.
