Description

This textbook is broadly composed of four parts. Part 1 covers the fundamentals of educational technology, comprising Chapters 1 through 3. Chapter 1 examines the historical evolution of the definition of educational technology and its major areas based on that definition, as well as the key characteristics of educational technology research in Korea. Chapter 2 reviews the historical development of educational technology in the United States and Korea in light of the trends of the times. Chapter 3 examines the process by which the academic foundations of educational technology were established, focusing on learning theory, communication theory, systems theory, and performance technology theory, which form the theoretical basis of the field. Part 2 covers instructional design, comprising Chapters 4 through 6. Chapter 4 introduces the origins and key characteristics of instructional systems design, as well as major models that have developed from the 1970s to the present. Chapter 5 examines the concepts, processes, and representative models of needs analysis—which analyzes the causes of performance issues to propose optimal solutions prior to educational planning—and explores models and various techniques for task analysis, which classifies the types of content learners need to study and determines their sequence. Chapter 6 covers Gagne's Nine Events Theory, Merrill's Content Element Presentation Theory, and Keller's Motivational Design Theory, which are considered representative instructional design theories and strategies in the field of educational technology. Part 3 deals with content related to instructional methods, comprising Chapters 7 through 11. Each chapter in Part 3 covers the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and application procedures of the most representative instructional methods applicable in actual education and learning processes, including lecture-based instruction, discussion-based instruction, cooperative learning, problem-based learning, and blended learning.
