Song Jae-hoon: Christian philosophy of history
Emphasizing the necessity of Christians to possess a sound Christian perspective on history, this work examines the definition, principles, meaning, and purpose of history based on a worldview derived from the Word of God. Part 1 demonstrates the academic validity of Christian philosophy of history, while Chapters 1 through 3 of Part 2 deal with this philosophy in earnest. It derives various premises that a Christian perspective on history must embrace, and Chapters 4 and 5 of Part 2 address the object of historical knowledge and historical interpretation. It argues that the history prioritized by the Christian perspective is "church history" (missionary history), and by adopting Nash's "weak subjectivism/objectivism model," it acknowledges the necessity of subjective interpretation but asserts that arbitrary interpretation must be avoided. In other words, it argues that while "history as it is" is impossible, one must strive for objective interpretation. To support all these arguments, the work systematically organizes vast academic materials and persuasively presents Christian philosophy of history and a historical perspective by critically analyzing and applying key arguments. The author’s motivation for taking an interest in and researching Christian philosophy of history and historical perspectives stemmed from a critical awareness of the harmful anti-faith aspects of contemporary Christian faith. Diagnosing that modern Christian faith has degenerated into blind faith without reason, evidence, basic reasoning, or firm knowledge, leaning toward emotionalism or becoming mired in "inner roomism" manifested only within the church or private chambers, he believed that Christians have a duty to overcome anti-intellectualism, strengthen their faith through knowledge, and approach knowledge with faith upon emerging from their inner chambers. Accordingly, he sought to establish a historical perspective based on the Word of God and to undertake the task of purifying this perspective from its very roots, thoroughly purifying every corner of it with the Word of God.
