Son Shin-young: Research on Buddhist Architecture in the Late Joseon Dynasty
In art history, the study of identifying artists and figures associated with sculptures is an established methodology, yet it is rarely utilized in the history of architecture. This is because, unlike art history, it is difficult to develop theories on artists or specific works due to the scarcity of relevant records. However, a meticulous examination of the numerous records from the late Joseon period can yield, albeit minute, information regarding related figures. As such information accumulates, it becomes possible to catalog Buddhist temples built by master carpenters, such as the *Dopyeonsu*, and subsequently attempt to analyze their works based on this catalog. This book is an attempt to achieve this goal and is intended to serve as a stepping stone for the study of Buddhist architectural history in the late Joseon period.
