It isn’t easy to read about experiences with prayer and spirituality, but this is still a good book to read.
Saint Teresa of Jesus: Castle of the Soul
The Interior Castle is a teaching on prayer and the stages of spiritual life, written directly for the Carmelite nuns by Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515–1582), an outstanding mystic in Christian history, reformer of the Carmelite Order, and Doctor of the Church. Drawing on her own experience, she compares the depths of the soul to a castle divided into seven mansions and explains in detail the journey from self-knowledge to loving union with God, or spiritual marriage. Teresa wrote this work in 1577, five years before her death, and it can be seen as reflecting almost the entirety of her journey of prayer and spiritual life. The first edition of the Korean translation by the late Father Choi Min-sun was published in 1970. It is a celebrated spiritual classic, loved by Carmelite members as well as countless theology students, religious, and believers in the Korean Church. This revised edition preserves Father Choi Min-sun’s poetic, flowing style as much as possible, honoring the significance and value of the first Korean translation, while revising or explaining some expressions that are difficult for modern readers to understand or whose meaning is unclear. Summary: One of the precious works of Saint Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Ávila), an outstanding Christian mystic, this is a teaching on prayer and the stages of spiritual life that she wrote for Carmelite nuns based on her own experience.
