Description

This small book, A Gift to God, is a collection of selected passages from Mother Teresa’s best-known sayings, prayers, meditations, letters, and talks. The life of Saint Mother Teresa—the mother of the poor, sick, and lonely: Born on August 27, 1910, in Skopje, Yugoslavia, she decided at age 13 to become a nun. At 18, she went to Ireland and entered the Loreto convent as a postulant. After becoming a nun, she was sent to India in 1928 and served for more than 20 years as a teacher at St. Agnes High School in Calcutta, eventually becoming its principal. One day, however, she decided to leave the school. “I thought my mission was to care for the poor and those dying alone, rather than teach the children of the wealthy.” Those were her words as she stepped down. In 1948, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in the slums of Calcutta. With the love and grace of Christ, it grew into a large organization helping the poor in 68 countries around the world. In honor of her spirit of service, more than 1,600 nuns, around 180 brothers, and about 100,000 volunteers followed her example, becoming companions of Christ who run 70 schools for the poor, 260 hospitals and clinics, 58 leprosy centers, and 32 homes for the dying. For her achievements, Mother Teresa received awards including Pope John XXIII’s Peace Prize, India’s Nehru Award, and the Joseph Kennedy Award for service. The Nobel Committee said: “The Nobel Committee could not withhold the Nobel Peace Prize from Mother Teresa, in recognition of her tireless efforts to reduce poverty and misery that threaten world peace.”

The back part of the book was torn when it arrived, so I left it by the door on the day I was going out to exchange it. I got on the bus and paid, and the front door slammed so hard that I could feel it against my back. I’m now being treated for severe back pain. Sister, why is this happening? I regret buying the book. If these are Mother Teresa’s writings, the correct Catholic term is “God” in the Catholic form, not the Protestant wording used in the title; the correct term is “Mass,” not the
