Description

This is the second volume of *Savage Detectives*, a novel by Roberto Bolaño, a representative author of Latin American literature. Published in 1998, it won the Romulo Gallegos Prize—often called the "Nobel Prize of Latin American Literature"—immediately after its release, establishing Bolaño as the greatest writer in the Spanish-speaking world. Spanning from 1968 to 1996, the novel tracks the lives, people, and events experienced by Bellano and Lima, two young men willing to do anything for poetry. Their journey begins in Mexico City and crosses borders and continents, passing through Paris, Israel, Nicaragua, Barcelona, and Africa. By piecing together the voices of various individuals who met the two poets, the author completes a puzzle depicting the lives, loves, dreams, and frustrations of these passionate young literary enthusiasts. The work is divided into three parts; Parts 1 and 3 are presented as the diary of a seventeen-year-old aspiring poet named García Madero, while the extensive Part 2 unfolds in the form of interviews narrated by various people.

It is simply astonishing how Bolaño was able to write a book like this. The diverse cast of characters and the generational setting make us reflect deeply on the modern era.

I purchased this along with Volume 1. Since the single volume is about a thousand pages long, I thought it would be difficult to carry around, so I chose the split-volume version. I am looking forward to it because it is a book by an author I haven't seen before.
