Description

While clearing out her mother's home, documentary filmmaker Polly Morland found a book that had fallen behind a bookcase. Her mother had Alzheimer's. The book was The Lucky Ones, published in 1967. Written by British author John Berger with photographer Jean Mohr, it follows the lives of a doctor and patients in a rural English village over six weeks. As Morland read, she realized the setting was the village where she lives. More than fifty years later, she suddenly wondered about the doctor now caring for patients in that same village: How have the lives of doctors and patients changed over half a century? The story begins as Morland follows Berger into the village she calls home. Closely observing people's daily lives, she explores what it means to be a doctor in an age when society and medicine are changing rapidly. From the scenes she encounters, Morland draws out human suffering and loneliness, and recognizes the loss of a once-taken-for-granted relationship between doctor and patient. Can we recover our sense of being 'us'? Perhaps this book offers a clue.

The book calmly portrays the relationship between doctors and patients that lives in all of us, yet I read it as a story about doctors' professional ethics that someone needed to tell. Depending on how you look at it, it can be read as a story about public health care, the humanism of a small rural town, or its somewhat pastoral scenery. These harmonious stories make clearer the kind of medical system and doctor-patient relationship we should strive for. The young doctor's mentor and his story
