Description

The Industrial Revolution; the rise and fall of the British Empire; provocations by Germany, Japan, and Russia; the emergence of the United States as the world’s strongest superpower; the Arab Spring, which brought sweeping change to the Middle East; the low-growth trend that began in Japan and is spreading to Europe; China’s explosive economic growth; Britain’s decision to leave the EU; and Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president. Behind all these historical events lies “population.” A close look at population changes shows that population has played a decisive role at every turning point in world history. This book focuses on the issue of population, which has been undervalued despite its important role in major changes in world history. Drawing on historical facts and a wealth of statistics, it explains the power of population as an unseen mutual catalyst. It presents statistics and numbers—which might otherwise feel boring—in an engaging way alongside real examples, making it easy to understand how population has changed history.

I majored in history in graduate school. When I overlaid a demographic approach on a purely geographic and historical approach, I realized new things I had not seen before. The Franco-Prussian War, the Yugoslav Wars, and so on—this book is as interesting, useful, and easy to read as Professor Samuel Huntington’s books, which I enjoyed..

What on earth is wrong with South Korea that people are not having children? More than anything else, this should be selected as the country’s top priority to solve. Politicians, businesses, religious leaders, civil servants, and the general public should all be on high alert and fully focused for the next 10 years, and must break the cycle of low birth rates and solve this problem.
