Description

The 21st century is referred to as the "century of the economic Cold War" on one hand, and the "century of culture" on the other. "Knowing" the history and culture of the Third World will serve as a cornerstone for advancing into a wider world, and this will be a key process in which we actively participate in globalization rather than becoming subordinate to it. Therefore, rather than merely dwelling on the specific details of the history and culture of the Third World explored in this textbook, it is of paramount importance for readers to go beyond that and accurately recognize the significance of the key issues emerging within that history and culture. Only when "recognizing" history and culture takes precedence over "accumulating knowledge" can we break free from the narrow-minded understanding that has historically evaluated the Third World based on the "sole" standard from the perspective of developed nations. It is no exaggeration to say that human life in the 21st century has become global. Whether we like it or not, responding to the reality of globalization requires thinking on a global scale, and "knowing" the Third World is both a part of and the beginning of such a response. With the aforementioned critical perspective, this textbook attempts to explore the events and phenomena that marked the most significant turning points in the history and culture of Southeast Asia, India, West Asia, Central Asia, Latin America, and Africa from an internal Third World perspective. It is nearly impossible to find commonalities in the historical developments and cultural characteristics of Third World countries other than the fact that they experienced Western colonialism, imperialism, and neocolonialism, and such an attempt risks being a fabrication.
