Moon Sung-jin: Modernity and Publicness
The process of modernization has promoted individual freedom and rights and provided opportunities for material abundance and wealth, but it has also led to equally serious social pathological problems. The competitiveness and efficiency of the capitalist market has resulted in cultural loss, the lack of normative justice of social order, the destruction of individual identity, and a variety of complex social problems. It is produced by a specific social pathological extension of culture, social life, dispersal and fragmentation, labor's product and toolification, individualism, loss of community, waterism, income polarization, personal loneliness and insecurity. These social pathological phenomena are not limited to a particular individual or group but are public problems experienced in the general sphere of society. And civil society, made up of these pathological agents, loses the possibility of democratic politics through free communication with the state-owned power and capitalist economic order. In this sense, the crisis of modernity is a crisis of publicity. The book is about searching the context of modernity for the meaning and possibilities of publicity. More than that, the limits and problems of the divisibility of modern publicity are pointed to and proposed democratic publicity as an alternative to overcoming the challenges of the interdisclosure order. In this regard, the book develops the following sequence:. Part 1 deals with modernity. Chapter 1 develops a deep discussion of the historical background and meaning of modernity, social and economic impacts, and the inner division of modern planning.
