A long-awaited new book has come out by my favorite author, Kim Hyun-kyung (@vanessahkim). She has often published books with coauthors, but this is her first solo book in three years. I had waited eagerly, so I quickly joined the funding campaign and received it. The story from her previous book continues. It feels like a record of one brilliant season, dazzling yet sometimes like an endlessly cloudy day. “He is becoming a story.” That sentence lingers. Becoming someone's story is
Kim Hyun-kyung: How did we meet, and how did we end up in this kind of love?
“Here is a love with a distorted shape.” I began recording one person's story. They stop believing in a love, search for it again, are betrayed, return, are betrayed again, and search once more. Can this be called love? “What would you do if you found out you were the person your lover was cheating with?” One day, realizing I had unknowingly become part of an affair, I could no longer bear feeling strange because of something I could not understand, and began recording my relationship with him. After a time when I could not leave the relationship, I seek him once more to face why. Hyunkyung asks, “Was my love wrong?” She writes of the awkwardness, pain, and guilt of loving someone and of being unable to free herself. Sharing love's strange desires and obsessions, the fever each of us may have suffered in life, she asks what your love was like. If fear has grown around love, will you join her in looking at what it is? The essay has three parts: meeting him, discovering his secret and the feelings that followed, their breakup, then the questions and feelings left behind, her trip to meet him, and her return to daily life. She asks whether her love is strange and what shape yours took. If fear has grown around love, shall we examine its reality together?
