Description

Some people seriously worry whether they can survive safely into old age. Their dream is to age naturally, become ill, and die. People around us worry whether they can reach adulthood without being killed by their parents (not strangers or criminals). The author precisely shows what living with a disability means and how society treats disabled people, broadening understanding and showing how to build a warmer society. Nineteen stories guide readers toward greater disability awareness. Kim Hyojin gives concrete examples: a mother using crutches is exhausted whenever she takes her feverish child to the hospital, and a powered wheelchair transforms daily life. The book shows how technology and government policy can improve disabled people’s lives. Rather than appealing to emotion about human rights, it explains what structural support and policy can change. It challenges people who see “disabled” before “human” and judge by that image, urging readers not to define someone by a single condition. Follow this navigation toward disability empathy: “See the world through the eyes of disabled people. Then this world will be more livable.”

I smiled while reading the 19 episodes, but after closing the book I reflected on my surroundings, people I’ve met, and myself. I wondered whether the disability-perspective supplement after each episode was necessary.
