I read it because it's a classic. I don't agree with everything in it. We need to understand the difference between license and freedom.
On Liberty. There are parts I can't agree with, but I learned a lot about Mill's ideas on freedom.
John Stuart Mill: On Freedom
If we have no freedom to express our opinions and no freedom to debate, all that remains is command and obedience. Command and obedience shut off our chance to correct mistakes and become better people. That is why humans need freedom. Individuality is also an expression of freedom, and it is possible when diversity is protected. When there is no room for the diversity that allows individuality to flourish, we move toward dehumanization through uniformity and sameness. To avoid being consumed by this dehumanization, we need the freedom to express our individuality. In On Liberty, Mill explains how to better understand and respect both our own freedoms and rights and those of others. The book also broadens our understanding of our own actions and other people's actions, and makes the case for social interaction. It argues that such interaction benefits society and explains why we must especially protect minority opinions. This is why we should read Mill today.
