Description

After the heartbreaking death of a teacher at Seoi Elementary School last year, the wounds and suffering teachers had experienced for years came to light. This book examines the chronology of the decline of teachers' authority, the concrete forms and causes of teachers' suffering, and possible ways to overcome their burdened lives and distorted professional culture. In doing so, it seeks to give courage to those pursuing a life as a teacher and encourage them to move forward. The author traces the roots of teachers' suffering to five traps: anti-intellectualism, a dichotomous worldview, colonialism, scapegoating, and scientism. These five traps have followed the history of the decline of teachers' authority. Along the way, various political and social pressures intruded, forcing teachers to continually bear wounds and pain. Ultimately, this kept them from fully carrying out their essential work of nurturing students' lives, and students, in turn, could not grow properly amid competition. Teachers' hidden suffering has been brought into the open, but their lives have not improved at all. Our society treats their longstanding pain as an individual's burden, and sends down a few lines of laws and regulations that once again push their suffering into darkness. What teachers need now is to answer the questions, “What is the essence of the suffering teachers experience?” and “What kind of culture should teachers build going forward?” This book offers the author's interpretation and proposals in response.

This book explores in detail the many difficulties teachers are experiencing. It shows that there are problems not only in policy but also in organizational culture. I think it may be easier to read if you have a solid background in areas such as philosophy.

I think this is a good book for aspiring and current teachers to read at a time when violations of educational activities are becoming a serious issue.
