Hanyang University Asia-Pacific Research Center Russia-Eurasia Research Project Group: Caucasus History and Geopolitics: War, Conflict, and Ideology

*History and Geopolitics of the Caucasus: War, Conflict, and Ideology* examines imperial ideology and conquest, ethnic identity and historical conflicts in the North Caucasus, and the history and geopolitics of the South Caucasus. Part 1 is structured around the theme "The Russian Empire and the North Caucasus: Imperial Ideology and Conquest." It analyzes the Russian Empire's ideology and conquest during the process of conquering the North Caucasus—a key strategic region for the empire's territorial expansion—focusing on war and migration. Part 2, under the theme "Geopolitics of the North Caucasus: Ethnic Identity and Historical Conflict," addresses the identities and geopolitical aspects of the Chechen and Ingushetia peoples. Chechen historical identity and modern geopolitical issues, as well as the conflicts within the Republic of Ingushetia, which have manifested through the historical relationship between Russia and Chechnya, are recognized as key historical and cultural elements essential for understanding the Eurasian era. Fundamentally, Part 2 focuses on the historical perceptions of empires and conquered peoples, as well as the state policies of the modern Russian Federation. Part 3, under the theme of “The History and Geopolitics of the South Caucasus,” focuses on examining the history and modern geopolitical issues of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. In particular, Part 3 interprets the religious and cultural history of the South Caucasus in a modern context and, through this, analyzes the geopolitical characteristics of the Eurasian era.
