It reveals the unvarnished reality of the Korean church. I support those who continue walking the path of faith amid these circumstances.
This book shows us a portrait of the modern Korean church. It is painful to see churches that have lost the ability to reform themselves, but the steps taken by believers who build new churches through their faith in God fill us with hope for heaven.
Gu Kwon-hyo: To leave the church and become the church
“Pastor Oh Jung-hyun of Sarang Church's plagiarism case”; “An assistant pastor at Incheon Saesomang Church used grooming tactics to sexually abuse multiple female congregants”; “Pastor Chun, identified only by his surname, committed sexual abuse and embezzled offering money.” Clergy misconduct and corruption keep surfacing just when people think they have forgotten the last case. When wrongdoing is exposed and the truth comes out, the proper course is for the perpetrator to apologize and receive a punishment that fits the offense. But churches often follow a different pattern. Congregants split between those trying to correct the problem and those protecting the perpetrator, and conflict erupts within the church. The media report on these cases, but they usually focus on the pastor who committed the abuse: what punishment the person deserves, whether they actually receive it, and, if not, why. Those reports are necessary, but their perpetrator-centered focus has clear limits.
