Grant Volmer: New Materialism and Materialism
Materialism is the view that physical materiality—such as technology, practice, or the materiality of the body—matters in shaping reality. This book is both an introduction to and an intervention in the materialist study of media. I argue that physical materiality is essential to the study of all media. At the same time, I argue that a materialist turn should take place without breaking with or rejecting the traditions of media and cultural studies. To attend to media’s materiality is to move away from the assumption that the people engaged in communication—people like you, the reader, and me, the author—are the only agents who generate meaning in communication. Rather than treating human agency alone as paramount, we need to emphasize how technology participates in changing the world in which we live and act. This is the fundamental position of materialist media theory. This does not mean ignoring questions of human agency, meaning, or interpretation. It does mean emphasizing the role media’s materiality plays in defining the limits and possibilities within which human agency, meaning, and interpretation become matters of concern and can be understood.
