Description

Meet four of the most moving moments that helped shape Korea’s proud democracy, brought to life in comics. Korean society faced countless conflicts and hardships on the way to building a mature democracy. Democracy did not arrive suddenly one day; ordinary citizens came together and won it by standing up to corruption and oppression. The Comics on the Pro-Democracy Movement series began in 2020 to preserve the history of the movement accurately and vividly share the passion of those days with younger generations. Since publication, it has received an enthusiastic response and affection from 80,000 readers, including children and teens. Planned by the Korea Democracy Foundation, earlier volumes featured artists Kim Hong-mo, Yoon Tae-ho, Ma Young-shin, and Yoo Seung-ha, who depicted Jeju 4·3, the April 19 Revolution, the May 18 Democratization Movement, and the June 10 Democratic Uprising. This year, Dadreagi joins the series, capturing the historic moments of the Busan-Masan Democratic Uprising in a vivid comic. Kim Hong-mo uses imaginative storytelling to connect Jeju haenyeo divers’ anti-Japanese demonstrations with Jeju 4·3, remembering the events again through the divers’ voices. Yoon Tae-ho draws on the perspective of a generation that experienced the war, candidly sharing the reflections of those who witnessed Korea’s development and the April 19 Revolution. Dadreagi restores the history of the 1979 Busan-Masan Democratic Uprising—the spark for the great pro-democracy movement of the 1980s—from the varied perspectives of ordinary citizens in Busan and Masan. Ma Young-shin points to the distortion and belittling of the May 18 Democratization Movement that continue to this day, asking how we should remember Gwangju 40 years later. Yoo Seung-ha, who ran through the streets during the June 10 Democratic Uprising, draws on personal experience to convey the voices everyone raised together that day in 1987.

I bought this to help my child encounter modern and contemporary history several times before starting middle school. They enjoyed learning the basics of Korean history, but as we moved into modern and contemporary history, they seemed to lose interest and find it difficult. I thought comics would make it easier to get started, so after a lot of consideration, I chose this book.
