Description

Our society faced countless conflicts and hardships on the way to mature democracy. Democracy did not arrive suddenly; ordinary citizens won it by joining together against injustice and oppression. The Comics on the Democracy Movement series began in 2020 to preserve this history accurately and bring the fervor of those days vividly to younger generations. Since publication, it has received an enthusiastic response from 80,000 readers, including children and teenagers. Planned by the Korea Democracy Foundation, the series featured artists Kim Hong-mo, Yoon Tae-ho, Ma Young-shin, and Yoo Seung-ha, who depicted Jeju 4·3, the April 19 Revolution, the May 18 Democratic Uprising, and the June 10 Democratic Struggle. This year artist Dadraegi joined and brought the historic moments of the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising to life in a vivid comic. Flame reconstructs in three dimensions, through the eyes of ordinary people, the 1979 Bu-Ma Uprising that became the starting point of the great democratic movement of the 1980s. Following the diverse stories of people in Busan and Masan who stood up to the Yushin regime and ultimately brought down dictatorship, readers feel the powerful longing of citizens who gave their lives to call for democracy rise in their own hearts. For the 45th anniversary, expert review and historical research, combined with Dadraegi's solid storytelling, have produced the first comic about the Bu-Ma Uprising, vividly and meticulously restoring those five days 45 years ago.

It's easy to read... but so brutal. The Bu-Ma Uprising is a chillingly close part of modern history; my son wanted to read it as soon as I finished. I felt the same horror when I learned about the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident—or, as some call it, the Yeosu-Suncheon Uprising—on the show Encyclopedia of Useless Facts. This is another sad chapter in which citizens and people's rights were trampled by those in power. The book vividly depicts ordinary people hoping the world might change when the

This comic tells the history of the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising, now marking its 45th anniversary, and shows the era through different characters. Beginning with university students opposing the Yushin system, the uprising drew in citizens and became the first step toward democratization in 1980, leading into the May 18 and June 10 democratic movements. It brings to life this history, including how authorities were deployed across Busan and Masan to beat and torture ordinary citizens at random,

They say Flame is the fifth volume in the Comics on the Democracy Movement series. The first four—Bitchang, April 19, Even If We Keep Talking, and 1987: That Day—tell the stories of Jeju 4·3, the April 19 Revolution, the May 18 Democratic Uprising, and the June 10 Democratic Struggle, and won an enthusiastic response from students and citizens unfamiliar with this history. “This book, Flame, about the anti-dictatorship democratic uprising that took place in Busan and Masan from October 16 to

Review-group copy. Plot overview: Flame is about the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising and has eight parts. It opens powerfully with the death of former president Park Chung-hee. Former Prime Minister Choi Kyu-hah then serves as acting president. The story goes back to before Park's death and recounts what led to it. In 1978, YH Trading announced an unjust shutdown and laid off many women workers. During protests, police violence and forced suppression led to the death of young worker Kim Kyung-sook.

I've recently become absorbed in books about Korean history. When I saw a review-group post about Flame, which covers modern history I remember less well, I wanted to learn more about the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising, so I read it carefully. It isn't that I've suddenly had more free time; I've become more interested because I believe the future depends on knowing history. The more I read, the more I realized that what I knew was mostly rote memorization. These days there are many books about

This book is by the artist Dadreagi. As a cartoonist, the author has written and illustrated Hello, Community (2 volumes), I Was Hospitalized Alone, Local Lives 99: Hwasun, Mirror, Mirror (3 volumes), and Daldangi Is in Her Tenth Year (2 volumes). This book was also planned by the Korea Democracy Foundation, a public institution under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, established to contribute to the development of democracy by commemorating the pro-democracy movement and carrying on its

Buried truth does not come to light easily. Those who fear the truth have more power, and the truth can become a great wave that breaks down the walls of illusion they have built so ruthlessly. The Bu-Ma Uprising was a democratic movement against Park Chung-hee's Yushin dictatorship, centered in Busan and Masan in October 1979. Another book now presents part of that truth. Most of all, its comic format makes it accessible and easy for anyone to read. The title Flame seems to refer to the

“You know what they say? When a protest breaks out in Masan, the regime changes.” I'm glad a historical comic about the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising has been published, since the event has received relatively little attention and few materials or works have been available. It is readable and vivid, and a good way to learn more accurately about the history of resistance for democracy. “We'll begin recording the oral testimony of Ms. Yoo Jin-sook, who took part in the Masan uprising during the 1979

I must be interested in modern history because I was born in the turbulent 1970s. I entered Changbi's Flame review event and luckily won a copy! Since it's a comic, I was able to read it quickly and easily. Everyone has heard of the Bu-Ma Uprising, but I especially appreciated how carefully researched details were presented in such an accessible way. The Bu-Ma Uprising became the spark that led to the Gwangju uprising, a major milestone in Korea's democracy movement, so I think this is a

Recommended for anyone who wants to get interested in modern Korean history. It's a good book told in comic form, not a long, boring text. As someone from Busan, I could focus even more on the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising. #Flame #BuMaDemocraticUprising #BuMaUprising #Dadraegi #ComicsOnTheDemocracyMovement #EducationalComic #Changbi #ChangbiReviewPanel
