Description

Bernard Werber, a bestselling author beloved by Korean readers, has released his new two-volume novel *Memory* through Open Books, translated by Jeon Mi-yeon, a translator specializing in French literature. Werber, who has consistently released new works, expands his unique worldview by traversing time and space under the theme of "memory." The protagonist, René Toledano, is a high school history teacher. He visits the Seine River cruise theater *Pandora's Box* and is chosen as a subject for regressive hypnosis. Having succeeded in the hypnosis, René is able to open the doors of memory lining the corridors of his unconscious. The memory he glimpses beyond the doors is that of his past life, lost on the battlefield of World War I. Tormented by memories that remain vivid and intense even after the hypnosis ends, he gets caught up in a physical altercation, unintentionally kills someone, and spends anxious days agonizing over whether or not to turn himself in to the police. Meanwhile, René discovers that he has had a total of 111 past lives and opens the doors to various memories, including his time as a World War I soldier. Surprisingly, his very first past life was that of Geb, a man living on the legendary island that modern people call "Atlantis." Believing that Atlantis has sunk beneath the sea, René is determined to save Geb at all costs, and Opal, a hypnotist he met on the stage of "Pandora's Box," volunteers to be his ally. With René being chased by the police and treated as a lunatic in his current life, and a great flood predicted in his past lives, what will be the fate of René and Geb?

Volume 2 follows Volume 1; I'm curious how the story will unfold. I'll have to read it after work today.

Bernard Werber's *Memory* allowed me to fully enjoy the fun of imagination, both visually and narratively. Throughout the reading, I felt as if I were watching a movie rather than reading a book, so personally, I hope it will be made into a film.

#Memory #BernardWerber #OpenBooks I read volumes 1 and 2 of Bernard Werber's *Memory*. Although it consists of two volumes, the content isn't overly vast, so it flowed smoothly and was enjoyable to read. Bernard's signature imagination was fully displayed in this novel as well. The story excitingly unfolds as the protagonist, René, a high school history teacher, discovers the history we have misunderstood through past lives and reincarnation. He uses hypnosis to communicate with his past lives

As long as we are alive, the misfortunes that befall us are merely small waves encountered on the voyage of life. How boring it would be without them. Memory Vol. 1, p. 146 To the eyes of those accustomed to lies, the truth is bound to appear suspicious. Memory Vol. 1, pp. 181–182 Like people under hypnosis, they cannot take their eyes off the screen that speaks only of four things: consume, vote, age, and death. If we just sit by and watch history continue to flow in such a bad direction as it

If I were asked to name a foreign author associated with "imagination," it would be Bernard Werber. I still vividly remember being astonished when I first read his book, wondering, "How on earth can he come up with such an idea?" That is why, whenever a new book by Bernard Werber is released, I am incredibly curious to see what kind of ingenious imagination it will contain this time. The cover of this book immediately caught my eye. It was a lenticular cover where the face and hair gradually
