This is a well-written introductory book on Joseon gisaeng, a subject that is often only vaguely understood. Although it might be viewed as taboo because it was written by a Japanese scholar during the Japanese colonial period, I believe this is an excessive concern, as Dr. Kim Il-kwon, a domestic specialist, has provided the commentary, and the tone of the Japanese scholar's writing shows a favorable view of Joseon's history and culture.
Yoshikawa Hesui: Observations on Joseon Gisaeng
*Observations on Joseon Gisaeng* as a text on modern cultural history. It is an account of observations on Joseon gisaeng viewed through the eyes of the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period. Through the landscapes and customs of Joseon as seen through Japanese eyes, one can discern the vibrant traditions of the country. By studying folklore with an interest in the changing customs of the social periphery and the gentry, the text offers a glimpse into the modern cultural aspects of gisaeng.
