Yoon Yong-taek et al.: Reading Jeju Island Through the Lens of Anthropology and Jeju Studies

Although Jeju Island is an island, its nature and culture are so diverse that it is often described as a small continent. In this book, various authors interpret Jeju Island through diverse academic approaches from the perspectives of anthropology and Jeju studies. An environmental philosopher and a human geographer discussed Jeju's environment through folk beliefs and dolmens; a historian covered Jeju's tile handicraft industry during the late Goryeo Dynasty and the female divers who left home to become women during the Japanese colonial period; and a nutritionist examined the food culture of Jeju City's teahouses from the Japanese colonial era to the present. An anthropologist looked into Jeju society and culture by discussing the historical and cultural resources of Jeju City's original downtown, heritage as a shared community resource, village social networks, and the division of ancestral rites; finally, a researcher on Jeju residents in Japan addressed the social networks of elderly Jeju residents and cases of people returning to their hometown of Jeju from Japan, even after death. Jeju Island: Perspectives of Anthropology and Jeju Studies This book was published to commemorate the retirement (February 28, 2022) of Professor Yoo Cheol-in, an anthropologist at Jeju National University. It is a collection of writings by those who have researched Jeju Island alongside him, examining the island and its people through the lens of anthropology and Jeju studies. From an anthropological perspective, Jeju studies, which deals with the island, is merely a part of it; however, from the perspective of Jeju studies, which encompasses the island's natural, humanities, and social fields, anthropology is just one part of it. In this book, the environment and history of Jeju Island are discussed through the lens of Jeju studies, while the communities of Jeju and the Jeju people residing in Japan are examined through the lens of anthropology. The book concludes with a biography and research achievements of Professor Yoo Cheol-in, and his academic activities regarding Jeju Island prompt a re-examination of the perspectives of anthropology and Jeju studies.
