It is easy to understand with pictures and explanations.
I've been keeping an eye on this series since *Changdeokgung Palace, the House Where the King Lives*, and it lives up to its reputation. My child particularly liked the page where the Jongmyo Shrine appears to be being expanded as you turn the page. I also really like the bold ink line illustrations. I will definitely make sure to take this with me the next time I visit Jongmyo.
Yoon Yeo-rim: Jongmyo Shrine
Volume 3 of the 'Shining UNESCO Our Heritage' series, titled *Jongmyo, Where Gods and Humans Meet*. This series introduces Korea's World Cultural Heritage, World Natural Heritage, World Memory of the World, and World Intangible Cultural Heritage—items designated by UNESCO as heritage to be protected and passed down globally. Rather than unilaterally imposing information and knowledge, it fosters a sense of pride by allowing readers to fully appreciate the historicity, beauty, and scientific significance of our national heritage. Volume 3 covers Jongmyo, which became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1995. It unfolds the story of Jongmyo, where the spirit tablets of deceased kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty are enshrined, centering on the 'Jongmyo Ancestral Rites.' It portrays not only the humans preparing for the rites with reverence but also the deities arriving with a sense of fulfillment to bestow blessings, using beautiful and evocative sentences reminiscent of poetry. Furthermore, it captures the eyes and hearts of children by depicting Jongmyo—where imaginary and real spaces coexist—simply yet symbolically with bold ink lines. Jongmyo enshrines the spirit tablets inhabited by the souls of deceased kings and queens. Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, built Jongmyo even before the royal palace. This demonstrates just how important a building Jongmyo was in Joseon. Today is the day when gods and humans meet at Jongmyo. The King goes to offer sacrifices to the gods. The gods, who were once the King and Queen in life, come to receive the sacrifices. The King enters Jongmyo along the King's path. The gods entered Jongmyo along the Gods' path, but… …. Yangjang.
