Description

Hangul is a phonemic writing system. Phonemic scripts teach the sounds of consonants and vowels and then syllables, but currently available Hangul learning books are mainly organized around the “whole-word reading method,” which treats Hangul as a syllabic script. This poses no difficulty when learning one-syllable words without a final consonant, but difficulties appear when learning one-syllable words with final consonants using the 27 possible final consonants. K-Phonics Hangul is a learning book that incorporates a letter-by-letter reading method: learners first develop an accurate understanding of the sounds of initial and final consonants in Hangul, then study syllables and words. It was developed alongside the K-Phonics Hangul App, created with support from small and medium-sized business R&D funding. During pilot lessons for multicultural families and foreigners as part of the app’s development and the book’s preparation, learners were able to grasp the principles of Hangul easily. In the view of the program developers and author, applying letter-by-letter learning to the whole-word method currently in use could make Hangul easier to teach to multicultural families, foreigners, and children encountering it for the first time.

I use this book when teaching Hangul to foreigners, and I have found it so useful that I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Korean-language education. 1. You can actually combine Hangul letters and listen to them repeatedly, practicing accurate pronunciation through repeated listening. Anytime, anywhere—as long as you have a smartphone. It’s so convenient! Pronunciation is really important when learning a foreign language, and I’d give this book 100 points for that. 2. It explains
