Description

Recently, disease patterns in Korea have shifted. While the incidence of once-prevalent acute infectious diseases has decreased due to advancements in modern medicine and improved living standards, chronic degenerative diseases caused by unhealthy lifestyles have increased, and the emergence of new infectious diseases is threatening public health. Meanwhile, environmental pollution resulting from industrialization and urbanization is destroying ecosystems and threatening human health and daily life, thereby highlighting the importance of environmental health. In this era, to maintain and improve human health, it is paramount to first identify and manage the health-related factors that influence it. A report published in Canada in 1974 titled "A New Perspective on Canadian Health" introduced the concept of the "field of health" regarding the determinants of health that influence health. This presented a new framework for solving health problems by classifying health determinants into four categories: human biological factors, environment, lifestyle, and healthcare systems. Furthermore, at the International Conference on Health Promotion held in Ottawa, Canada in 1986, "New Public Health" was proposed as a new concept representing a further advancement of public health, which had previously been regarded as a product of the era of infectious diseases. Meanwhile, along with the recognition that health is a fundamental right, the concept of health has shifted toward active health. This involves pursuing a state where one can enjoy physical and mental well-being while engaging in active social activities—that is, a state in which one can fully realize one's potential and achieve one's ideals. Public health is a discipline dedicated to improving the health of the population.
