Description

The author, a criminal psychologist and professor of child psychology, has psychologically analyzed more than 10,000 juvenile delinquents and criminals and came to feel that problems in parental attitudes toward child-rearing lie behind their behavior. The unlawful acts themselves are, of course, the responsibility and fault of the people who commit them, but the author argues that dangerous parenting attitudes form part of the background. Using the author's experience and research in this book as a cautionary example, it urges parents to examine and adjust their own approach by learning from cases that went wrong. The author knows better than anyone how a small difference—whether one crosses an appropriate boundary—can lead to a dramatically different result. The book draws on Symonds's classification of parental attitudes, which the author also uses when forming hypotheses in psychological analyses of juvenile delinquents, and presents four types of parents: overprotective, who intervene too actively to protect their children; authoritarian, who dominate and command children to make them act as the parents wish; blindly permissive, who give children everything they ask for without necessary discipline; and disengaged, who show too little interest and do not take an active role in their children's lives. Every parent is likely to fit one of these four types, and the attitude itself does not necessarily cause a problem. But crossing the line, even by a small amount, can bring unhappy consequences. Parents need to keep reflecting on their own approach and asking which type they are and whether they lean too far in one direction.

Good Parents Are Different by a Hair's Breadth, by Yasuyuki Deguchi, translated by Jin-a Kim. Lately, as my relationship with my adolescent and second-grade elementary school child has become difficult, I have been blaming myself. This book caught my attention. It describes four types of parental attitudes: overprotective, intervening too actively to protect a child; authoritarian, dominating and ordering the child to act as the parent wants; blindly permissive, giving the child everything they

At first, the “good parent” implied by the title bothered me. I usually try to avoid demanding perfection from parents. But, contrary to my concern, behind the somewhat intense wording I could feel the author's philosophy of child-rearing. The author's statement that “perfectly balanced parenting is impossible” also resonated with me. The examples of failure among juvenile delinquents and criminals, along with other useful information about parenting attitudes, made this an engaging book that I

I am sure I am a good parent, but this book made me look back and ask whether I really have been a good parent to my child. Children are greatly affected by their parents' attitudes as they grow. Instead of giving success stories, this book offers examples of failure and asks readers to use them as cautionary lessons and examine their own parenting. It felt like a blow to the head! I seem to have more than one problem. I thought I was a good parent if I fed my child well at home, spoke kindly,

Bookhive: Good Parents Are Different by a Hair's Breadth! Parenting education we need in a world where people cross the line. This is not a parenting book that simply tells you “this is the right way” and shares success stories about raising children. The author, Yasuyuki Deguchi, a criminal psychologist and professor of child psychology, says he came to see problems in parental attitudes while psychologically analyzing more than 10,000 juvenile delinquents and criminals. At last, a parenting

The author, Yasuyuki Deguchi, is a criminal psychologist and professor of child psychology. After psychologically analyzing more than 10,000 juvenile delinquents and criminals, he says he found the cause of problems in parents' child-rearing attitudes. Of course, the people who commit crimes are responsible for their acts, but his argument is that dangerous parenting attitudes lie behind them. Good Parents Are Different by a Hair's Breadth, by Yasuyuki Deguchi, translated by Jin-a Kim, Bookhive. Everyone wants to be a good parent. What does that actually mean? The author, a criminal psychologist and professor of child psychology, explains four broad parenting styles: overprotective, authoritarian, blindly permissive, and disengaged. Drawing on cases he personally encountered while working with more than 10,000 juvenile delinquents and criminals, he analyzes and explains parental

Since my child was born, I have ended each day by looking up and studying parenting information. I have found all kinds of writing in blogs, personal social media, articles, and statistics, saying things like “This is how you should parent” and “A parent's attitude determines a child's future.” It made me worry: Am I a good parent? Can I raise my child well? Then I read Good Parents Are Different by a Hair's Breadth. Most parenting books I had seen were about how to succeed or how a child

Giving birth to a child does not automatically make someone a good parent. Parents are beginners, so they can make many mistakes and fall short. Still, they need to treat the child they brought into the world as a person, without overprotecting, neglecting, ignoring, or being coercive toward them. At the very least, shouldn't parents raise their children responsibly? We often see the four parenting types mentioned in the book around us, and it is truly heartbreaking. Bright children gradually

I thought everyone wanted to be a good parent, and of course I assumed I was nothing like a bad parent. I also thought my child would never encounter or take part in crime. That was absolutely not true! We need to keep reflecting on how a caregiver's attitude is received by a child and be careful not to become one-sided. Let's be ready and willing to help, listen carefully, and keep an eye on them. Building trust comes first. “The real problem arises when a trait that needs correction shows

I wanted to read this book even more after seeing a recommendation from Lee Eun-kyung, the parenting education expert behind Wise Elementary School Life. The author, Yasuyuki Deguchi, a criminal psychologist and professor of child psychology, urges parents to study their own parenting as a cautionary lesson. In a world where people cross boundaries so often, learning how to avoid crossing the line as a parent feels essential. This seems like exactly the parenting book I need. The book divides
