I chose this book because I wanted to read it after seeing the movie The Odyssey. It is not too thick and reads easily without feeling like a burden. After reading it, I understood the movie much better. The backstory that does not appear in Nolan’s film is interesting, too.
I bought and read it before going to see the movie. The overall story was explained so clearly that it was very informative and helpful. I plan to read the Iliad for the first time, too.
This book retells the ancient epic Odyssey in a way that is easy for first-time readers to understand. Through Odysseus’s adventures, it invites us to think about human wisdom and courage, and the meaning of returning home.
Yang Seung-wook: The Odyssey for the First Time
Homer’s Odyssey, together with the Iliad, is regarded as the greatest epic poem and an enduring masterpiece. It is revered as a cornerstone of ancient Greek civilization and has become the standard for defining epic poetry. Odyssey means ‘the song of Odysseus.’ It consists of 12,110 lines and, like the Iliad, is divided into 24 books named after the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet. The story begins after Odysseus destroys Troy with the brilliant strategy of the wooden horse and sets off home with the spoils. He leaves Troy with about 600 men aboard twelve ships. But he loses both his ships and men along the way, and must face every kind of hardship for ten years before reaching his home on Ithaca. Join Odysseus, hero of the Trojan War, on an adventure into Homer’s world of ancient Greek monsters and nymphs.
