Chang'an began to emerge as the center of Buddhist scripture translation during the Western Jin Dynasty, starting when Zhu Fahu, a monk from the Great Yuezhi Kingdom, traveled from Dunhuang to Chang'an, built a temple outside Qingmen, and translated Buddhist scriptures during the reign of Emperor Wu of Qin. Subsequently, the translation of Buddhist scriptures became formally established as a religious and cultural undertaking of the feudal state, forming a vast monastic community with over 500 disciples participating in the translation. However, the region suffered immense damage during the three waves of Buddhist persecution spanning the Northern Wei, Northern Zhou, and Tang dynasties, which included the execution of monks and the destruction of scriptures and statues; as a result, Buddhist statues in the Xi'an region remain buried underground in an incomplete state.
