Description

Wisława Szymborska passed away on February 1, 2012, at her home in Krakow, southern Poland, due to lung cancer. Nine years later, a special anthology of Szymborska's poetry has been published by Munhak & Jiseongsa. What makes this collection special is that it allows readers to encounter early works that were not published during the poet's lifetime. These are the poems included in "Black Songs," which serves as the book's title and is placed at the very beginning of the collection. Professor Choi Seong-eun of the Department of Polish at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, who rediscovered Szymborska through her 2007 translation of *The End and the Beginning*, undertook the translation once again following her 2016 posthumous collection *Enough*. She has once again fully and vividly translated Szymborska's poetry into Korean, capturing her characteristic incisive and clear language, rich symbolism and metaphor, thought that is both cool and passionate, and concise yet restrained expressions and humor.
