The phrase saying that Haruki Murakami recognized the author of Close to Her resonated with me. Wang Dingguo was born in Taiwan in 1955 and is the head of a construction company. Before going into business, he wrote and won several literary awards, then worked as a civil servant before building his current company. I wondered what stories someone with such varied careers would tell. Lianghou, a 55-year-old man, is released from prison. His crime: murdering his wife. Back home, he endures his
The reason women's lives in this male-centered, authoritarian society don't feel so alien may be that they resemble our own country only 50 or 60 years ago. Every woman in the novel struggles to survive. Liu Lianghou, released on parole after serving time for killing his 57-year-old wife, tells the story of the women 'close to her' in the first person. Su suddenly appears and asks him for help, then unexpectedly returns with a child. He wants to comfort her wounds and give her everything she

I haven't read much Chinese fiction, so I was very curious about Taiwanese writer Wang Dingguo's novel Close to Her. More precisely, it is a Taiwanese novel, a love story. I was especially interested because it was recommended by Haruki Murakami, a Japanese author I like. After reading it, I understood why he recommended it. Wang Dingguo's own life also seemed like a movie. The book tells, in a man's first-person voice, about the women he met, love, and longing. The story lays bare
I haven't had many chances to read literary works from the Chinese-speaking world, despite the region's geographic closeness and shared feelings and culture. Recently I've begun discovering one or two works at a time. Close to Her, which I just read, is by Taiwanese author Wang Dingguo. He began writing at 17, won many literary awards, and became a rising star in Taiwan's literary scene. After announcing at 30 that he would stop writing, he returned to literature in 2004, and his works since
A story about one man's life and love. Told calmly in the first person, it is a novel that leaves a deep impression. She experiences gender discrimination from a young age and struggles to prove she can live independently. Through an unexpected turn of events, the two have a child and build a family. The Girl Nearby; review; Wang Dingguo; @rhkorea_books; RHK Book Club. This is the story of 57-year-old Liu Lianghou, recently released on parole, who recounts half his life in the first person. Did he go to prison because he pushed his wife off a height and caused her death? Lianghou says that his unfaithful wife lost both money and love, lost her mind, and jumped. His son, Ruishu, keeps investigating his mother's death, suspecting and watching his father, while Lianghou pretends to have
The book begins with love between father and son, sibling love, and friendship between people, then expands into love more broadly. Its story tangles and untangles, breaks and reconnects. It is about a man and the women who gave him a chance to love, about living and dying for love, and whether we can believe they will someday be free of pain. Following the characters in Close to Her invites deep reflection on the love that exists in the world.

Wang Dingguo: Close, her
A new book, Close to Her, has been published by Wang Dingguo, a celebrated Taiwanese writer who swept major literary awards as a teenager, abruptly stopped writing, and returned 20 years later with a novel. Close to Her tells the story of one man's life and love. Liu Lianghou, a 57-year-old man released on parole, recounts half his life to readers in the first person. Raised in a poor family, the protagonist longed to get ahead and chose to work at a watch shop at an age when boys his age were enjoying university life. For Lianghou, time was money. The heroine, Yu Minsu, comes from a politically influential family where male authority is strong. She has never worried about food, clothing, or shelter, but suffers gender discrimination within her family. The two protagonists, who had no connection at first, meet their fate six years later in marriage and family life. The novel explores the circumstances and relationships of people from different groups through Lianghou's perspective. The author invites readers to carefully appreciate how all the threads become tangled and untangled, broken and joined again.
