After Naked World History, I ended up buying the Korean history book, too. I like that it makes history much easier and more enjoyable to read.
I’d always thought I should study history, but I never got around to giving it a try. This book made it easy for me to read about it!!
I knew some things about the Goryeo period, but felt there was less information about it than about the Joseon period. The book is divided into easy-to-read sections focused on major events, so I finished it in no time. It had been a while since I’d read a book so quickly, and I felt proud of myself, too. 😊
Story-driven Korean history that anyone can enjoy without feeling burdened! The storytelling show Naked Korean History began with the idea, ‘Let’s weave the scenes of our history into easy, friendly, fascinating stories so they will stay in people’s memories for a long time.’ Following its Joseon volume, it has now published Goryeo, the story of an enterprising nation. It consists of eight stories, from early Goryeo, when the royal court was caught in political turmoil, to late Goryeo, when the
What is history? History is a process of continuous interaction between historians and the facts they study, an unending conversation between the present and the past. This sentence from Edward Carr’s What Is History? reflects his view of the historian’s role and the nature of historical research. Carr stresses the interaction between historians and historical facts. Historians do not simply record facts; they interpret them and give them meaning. This means they look at the past from the

If Joseon was a country of Neo-Confucianism, Goryeo was a country of Buddhism. While Joseon families lived under a patriarchal order, relationships within Goryeo families were more egalitarian. While Joseon upheld the idea that boys and girls should not sit together after age seven, Goryeo was more tolerant of romantic love between men and women.
Whether in book or TV form, nearly every Korean has heard of Naked Korean History at least once! If you want an intellectual journey through vivid historical events with compelling stories, instead of sitting bored in a classroom memorizing timelines and facts, remember Naked Korean History. If you don’t feel like reading, you can binge-watch the TV series. If you want to study a more organized account and remember it with diagrams and photos, I recommend the book. When you watch a video, it
This book tells the stories of people who protected Goryeo, including General Kang Gam-chan, General Choi Yeong, and King Taejo Wang Geon. It covers anecdotes such as Wang Geon taking many wives for political reasons, Empress Dowager Cheonchu’s downfall, the Battle of Gwiju between Kang Gam-chan and Xiao Baiya, and Empress Gi’s power. You know how whenever two or more people gather at work, the conversation turns to behind-the-scenes stories? History has plenty of those, too, and this book
Like the fascinating stories you see on TV, this book gives you even more detail, with illustrations and photos that add context and help you understand the subject more deeply. “Consider Goryeo.” As I read about Goryeo, which has received less attention and been undervalued compared with Joseon, I realized that Goryeo—the origin of the name Korea—may have had a lot in common with us today. Since its capital was Kaesong, now in North Korea, I also felt that many stories remain hidden or

tvN STORY <Naked Korean History> Production Team: Naked Korean History: Goryeo Dynasty
The popular Korean-history series Naked Korean History is back with its second volume in the chronological series. The books select essential, pivotal scenes from tvN STORY’s educational variety show Naked Korean History, which combines knowledge and entertainment. Chosen by 100,000 readers, the series has established itself as an accessible history book with clear explanations and compelling storytelling. Naked Korean History: Goryeo keeps the series’ strengths while focusing on Goryeo, a country that feels both familiar and unfamiliar. When asked, ‘What was the medieval period in Korean history?’ we somehow hesitate to name Goryeo right away. Wars continued throughout the Goryeo era, destroying many artifacts, and its capital is now in North Korea, so we rarely encounter it in everyday life. By uncovering hidden stories and bringing history closer, this book unfolds Goryeo’s turbulent history from its founding in 918 to its fall in 1392. Follow figures who defended the country with resolve in every crisis—from General Gang Gam-chan, who brought the Goryeo–Khitan War to a victorious close, to General Choe Yeong, famous for the saying ‘Treat gold as you would a stone’—and you begin to understand why Goryeo is called a turbulent nation. Through eight of the most decisive moments in Goryeo history, readers can see scattered fragments of history come together into a larger picture and discover the true character of Goryeo: a small but powerful country that changed the balance of power in East Asia.
