Description

Even a veteran interpreter with 30 years of experience regularly encounters unfamiliar words! The reason they can still understand them on sight is that they recall how word parts combine and can easily infer roughly what a new word means. The author therefore stresses that the key to dramatically expanding vocabulary is association, not memorization. This book is an introductory guide optimized for building vocabulary. It explains how words combine and are formed through easy-to-understand stories, offering the remarkable experience of expanding the 500 basic words introduced into a vocabulary of 10,000 words.

It is useful, but it feels like it is just 2% short of what it could be. A slightly better-organized table of contents would have made it much better. That is not to say it is a waste of money or that the content is poor. It simply lacks some of the pull that would really draw readers in.

I chose this book, The English Vocabulary Textbook You’ll Never Forget After Reading It Once, to help my younger child, a seventh grader who has just started studying English, with memorizing the English words they find difficult. My younger one hates memorizing vocabulary and is currently trying to learn 50 essential middle-school words a week, but complains that even 50 are too many. I wanted to find a way to make learning English words easier and more fun, so I picked this book and opened it

Unless a language is your native tongue, you need comprehensive study of its writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking to use it properly. We can see why learning in the same way we learned our native language is best by thinking about how we learned our own, yet we cannot ignore the need to study, especially to memorize. Vocabulary is particularly difficult: words are easily forgotten unless we keep studying them, and the sheer volume feels almost limitless. The more we learn, the harder it

Whenever I studied, I envied people with good memories. I wanted to be able to remember things effortlessly after seeing them just once. Maybe I found studying difficult because I needed to repeat things many times before they stuck. But I hear you can improve learning through association rather than memorization. A Textbook of English Words You Can Never Forget After Reading Once is by Tomokazu Makino. As a veteran interpreter, the author often encounters unfamiliar words, yet says they can

I have dozens of English vocabulary books on my shelves. The words I memorized in school disappeared from my memory long ago. Every New Year, I resolve to study English, but it is already May. I have decided to get back to it with A Textbook of English Words You Can Never Forget After Reading Once. Many English books say you can just look up words as you encounter them, but I have always thought vocabulary study should go along with studying English, so I kept collecting vocabulary books

How many words are in my head? I cannot even estimate. I have heard that adult women generally use 6,000 to 10,000 words a day, so perhaps I know more than 10,000. The author, Tomokazu Makino, says he has 10,000 English words in his head. It is amazing to know 10,000 words in a language that is not your own. But he says he does not memorize the words. When he says he knows 10,000 English words, he means that he can infer their meanings. Most words have a basic word, or stem. Many words are

Anyone who studies English knows how hard it is to memorize English words. A famous vocabulary book I bought before was no help either. I read and memorized a few pages, then gave up after a few days. The words just wouldn’t stick. In fact, I remember words more easily when I watch English-language movies, dramas, or animation and focus on the words I can make out. I make time to practice listening and speaking with movies, dramas, and animation, and honestly, they have helped me a lot. But my

It’s been a while since I read a book about memorizing English vocabulary. As expected, its approach is fresh, and I think it will help readers who struggle or feel frustrated with learning English words. The vocabulary is not difficult, and the concepts are explained clearly, so it is easy to read. Here is the table of contents: Introduction: You don’t need a good memory to study English words! Homeroom 1: Why do so many people struggle to study English words? Homeroom 2: What you need is not

When I studied English vocabulary, I mostly learned words by memorizing them. Even after all that effort, I would easily forget them over time or get confused, and there were times when learning vocabulary felt tedious and difficult. This time I read The English Vocabulary Textbook You’ll Never Forget After Reading It Once. It says that you don’t need much memory to learn English words; what you need is the ability to make associations, using word combinations to infer roughly what they mean. I

English learning covers vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I think vocabulary is the foundation, because you cannot get started without knowing words. Studying English has taught me that knowing many words matters, but so does properly understanding and using basic ones. I believe deeper study of phrasal verbs, prepositions, polysemous words, and words that serve as multiple parts of speech can improve your ability. I have lost count of how many times I have looked
