Description

*Designing the News: Shedding the Newspaper's Tackiness* (The Newspaper Designer's Handbook) advocates for innovation in editorial design. A representative work by editor and columnist Tim Harrower, this book is a steady seller in the field, having been first published in 1989 and now in its seventh revised edition this year. In this book, the author argues for a transition from a "newspaper to be read" to a "newspaper to be seen" through modular editing. He asserts that the role of the newspaper must shift from a solemn listing of articles to the delivery of information that is easy to read, and that innovation in newspaper design—through modular editing and the introduction of graphic elements—must be at the center of this role. Therefore, editorial design comes to signify a role as an active organizer that goes beyond a simple arrangement of articles to organize news in a way that is more visually striking and easy to read.

It has so many real-world examples that it can be called a textbook on newspaper design.

I work as a newspaper editor, and this is a book I borrowed and read from the library... I bought it to keep by my side forever and refer to whenever I need it. The content is substantial and great.
