The second volume of the *Selected Works of Takiji Kobayashi* contains *The Factory Cell*, *The Party Activist*, *People of the Transition Period*, and *Solitary Confinement*. *The Factory Cell* depicts the activities of an illegal factory cell (a Communist Party organization) inside a massive factory following the March 15 Incident of 1928, while *The Party Activist*, written in August 1932—one year before Takiji's death—demonstrates the highest level of proletarian literature of the time. *People of the Transition Period* remained unfinished due to Takiji's sudden death. The final short story, *Solitary Confinement*, is a collection of several stories at the draft stage. These works are all based on Takiji's own direct and indirect experiences and vividly depict the political and class situation of Japanese society at the time.
