This is the most literaryly successful of Stéphane's novels. The Bible has a written history of Saul, David and the reign of Solomon. King Solomon wants to compile official reports on this in order to justify his rule by honoring the great achievement of King David, the first king. But the historian Ethan, who was given the task of writing the report, knows from many records and testimony that he was not a great king to be praised by David. It's a historical novel and an analogy to the political and cultural situation in East Germany.
