Son Young-woon: Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws
Montesquieu (1689–1755) was a French jurist and political philosopher. He is famous for being the first to advocate the theory of the separation of state powers. His theory of the separation of powers based on law has been adopted in the constitutions establishing governments of many modern nations. Montesquieu spent 20 years completing *The Spirit of the Laws*. He classified forms of government into republics, monarchies, and despotism, and considered England, which adopted the system of the separation of powers and a constitutional monarchy, to be the most exemplary form of government. [NEW Seoul National University Selected 60 Humanities Classics] Volume 17, *The Spirit of the Laws*, offers an accessible explanation of Montesquieu's work, which sought to approach the essence of law by exploring the spirit behind various laws, prompting readers to reflect on what law truly is.
