Simone de Beauvoir: farewell ritual

Sartre, a representative philosopher and writer of existentialism, a Resistance fighter who refused the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the epitome of an intellectual in action. And Beauvoir's lifelong lover. This book captures the story of the ten years leading up to his death. Recorded by Simone de Beauvoir, his lifelong companion and a thinker who, along with Sartre, represents the 20th century, is a leading figure in the world. Beauvoir, who met Sartre at the age of 21, recognized him as the person she would spend her life with, yet she did not wish to be bound by the social convention of marriage. Wanting to be together as equal partners rather than as husband and wife as was the norm at the time, they decided to enter into a contractual marriage—a new form of relationship, both then and now. The contract, initially set for a two-year term, continued for 51 years until Sartre's death. *The Ritual of Farewell* is a book that records the final ten years of Beauvoir and Sartre, who chose to spend their lives together without being bound by any legal or social conventions. At the same time, it is also a record marking the end of one of the most dynamic eras of the 20th century in which they lived together. Throughout their lives, the two served as each other's first readers and editors, and Sartre called Beauvoir his book censor and licensee. When the elderly Sartre lost his sight, Beauvoir became his eyes by reading to him every day. This book, *The Ritual of Farewell*, published after Sartre's death, is effectively the only work by Beauvoir that Sartre never saw.
