Sim Hee-gi et al.: Compilation of Gyeolsong Ip-an from the Joseon Dynasty

This book (*Jipseong* of Gyeolsong Ipan* of the Joseon Dynasty) is an intellectual achievement that comprehensively reflects the knowledge of the South Korean academic community regarding Gyeolsong Ipan* of the Joseon Dynasty as of 2021. This compilation includes 70 Gyeolsong Ipan. Although more Gyeolsong Ipan were collected, those with such severe omissions that it was difficult to convey their content were excluded in the final stage. There are likely many Gyeolsong Ipans not included in this compilation. The exploration and research of those cases are the task of future scholars. I would like to mention the two most valuable achievements the translation and annotation team gained from this project. First, the team's perspective and level in approaching Gyeolsong Ipan have been elevated to a new level. While many researchers have written in-depth papers on individual Gyeolsong Ipans, few have thoroughly studied all 70 of them. Second, future scholars will be able to conduct their self-study of Gyeolsong Ipan by reading through this compilation. It may be difficult at first, but if they persevere patiently and keep moving forward, they will bear great fruit. If there is a rationale for not shirking this difficult task, it lies in using this compilation as a stepping stone to help future generations reach a higher level.
