An illustrated essay by Shugo Shiroyagi, an illustrator with 260,000 Instagram followers! This story, inspired by a real incident, has drawn reviews and interest from more than 3,000 readers (Amazon Japan, as of March 2024)! 'You think your children would never bully a friend, don't you?' (from the book) When I learn that my child has been bullying a friend for some time, how should I, as a parent, accept and respond to it? School violence and bullying can never be light subjects, and society reacts sensitively. Even so, it is questionable whether a social response system is established. If anything, bullying seems to be spreading much more widely and becoming more severe. As children enter society at younger ages, we now worry about bullying even for children aged three or four. We fear that our child, someone we know, or we ourselves could become a victim, and are told to imagine and prepare for such a situation. Yet we overlook one possibility: 'What if my child is the aggressor, not the victim?' This book is especially valuable for that reason. My Daughter Is a Bully approaches a bullying incident from the perspectives of both the aggressor's and victim's families, portraying parents' complex feelings: being unable to forgive the aggressor, not wanting to believe one's child is the aggressor, and wanting to protect one's child. It depicts them wandering after losing even the chance to face their child properly because a third party reported the incident. It prompts deep reflection about what I might think and how I might act if this happened to me.

Whenever the school calls, I get tense first. In the lower grades it was often because my child was sick; in the upper grades there could be many possibilities, so I could not help being more nervous. But what if the call was about my child being a bullying aggressor or victim? Wouldn't I first feel despair? Parents have to steady themselves, but that does not mean everything will go well just because one is a parent. People often imagine their child as a victim, but there is an aggressor in

I think I have always considered things only from victims' perspectives and read only books about victims. I had never considered the aggressor's point of view, and I was not pleased to see books from that perspective. I read this wondering what a book from an aggressor's point of view, where no excuse is needed or possible, would be like and what that excuse might be. My Daughter Is a Bully seems to be written from the parents' perspectives more than the deep psychology of the aggressor and

But Mana and her parents were an ordinary family, nothing special. That made it even scarier and more worrying. Since my child started elementary school, I have occasionally heard that a school violence committee was convened. I hear these committees meet more often than before, and I worry a little more as my child approaches the upper grades. Neither victims nor aggressors were given a chance. Could it be that I too think, 'My child would never do that'? I worried my child might be a victim,

No one would think their daughter would become the ringleader of bullying. But both the ringleader and the victim are someone's precious child. If everyone received proper upbringing at home and grew up accordingly, such problems might not happen, but children act differently at home, at school, and among their peers. They say and do things at school that parents cannot know about; sometimes they do things parents would never dream of. This book uses different colors in its comic depiction of

These days I often come across news about school violence, including at the start of each school year. Stories of students who bully others or are bullied, not only verbal abuse, are especially bitter. Today's book review recommends the illustrated essay My Daughter Is a Bully. It is a comic book, but an essay recommendation that depicts reality. It is a new release from Empty Page, recommended to parents. I am unmarried and have no children, but in my work at a center I often counsel people

📕 My Daughter Is a Bully, by Shugo Shiroyagi / Publisher: Empty Page / Recommended -------------------------------------------------------------- ❓Have you ever thought your child could be an aggressor in school violence? -------------------------------------------------------------- 🤔Anyone can become an aggressor in school violence, though they must not. Most parents think about what to do if their child is a victim of school violence. Some do not consider what to do if their child is the

📚 My Daughter Is a Bully. 📌 A story about school violence, recognized as one of the most important and frequent problems at schools today, told through the experience of the aggressor's parent. 📌 It seems fact-based and objective, but is an extremely personal story. 📌 Since it is about Japanese schools, some things differ from our country's circumstances. 📌 It was upsetting that the aggressor's parent acknowledged and reflected on being the aggressor's parent, but only took proper

🔹️Title: My Daughter Is a Bully 🔹️Written and illustrated by: Shugo Shiroyagi 🔹️Translated by: Ji-won Jeong 🔹️Length: 181 pages. 'You think your children would never bully a friend, don't you?' That was the line that caught my eye as soon as I received the book. Perhaps the author wanted to send a message to parents who mistakenly think they know everything about their children. Children are precious to their parents. We would not even want to imagine such a precious child becoming a victim

From the book: Starting the next day, Mina would stay home from school for a while. I also took some time off. Online hate comments grew worse by the day, and false information spread. Our home address was revealed, and someone even left garbage in our yard. It seems prank calls also came to my husband's workplace. 🍋My thoughts: A few years ago at our academy, an exceptionally conscientious student was identified as an aggressor, and the whole neighborhood was in an uproar. The parents said
