Shin Jae-heup: Exploring the History of Western Education
The purpose of studying the history of Western education is to develop a historical perspective on educational phenomena by studying the historical development of education. In other words, it aims to cultivate the insight and ability to diagnose and understand our current educational realities and problems from a historical standpoint by understanding how educational activities, intended to form desirable human beings, have historically unfolded and evolved, and by comprehending the historical and social backgrounds within which such changes in Western education took place. Essentially, it seeks to gain the wisdom and insight to contemplate the education of today and tomorrow through the lens of past history. While the history of Western education can be written in various ways—such as syntactic, cultural, problem-based, comparative, person-centered, or ideological—this book avoids bias toward any single perspective. Instead, it presents the history syntactically, following the general periodization of the flow of Western education, with a focus on the background of educational formation, educational systems, and representative educational thinkers of each era. Therefore, to enhance comprehension, the content has been written in a simple manner, and various illustrations and photographs have been included to enhance visual appeal. By including photographs and illustrations, the rigid image of the ‘History of Western Education’ can be somewhat alleviated, and it is expected to be of great help in understanding the content of the textbook. Furthermore, this book aims to enhance its usability in educational settings by writing in an easy-to-understand manner to convey various contents regarding the history of Western education, and by including sections such as ‘Learning Objectives,’ ‘Keywords,’ and ‘Let’s Think About It.’
