Description

The AI revolution, digital transformation, and low growth: how can employees survive and thrive in this new turbulent era? This book uses Q&A to explain principles for building a strong career, from setting career goals and planning a path to promotion and salary negotiations, the timing of a job change and interview skills, adapting to an organization, and personal branding. “Build resilient career muscle that won’t waver!” Looking back on his life, Confucius said that at thirty he had established his life’s goals and foundations (er li, “standing firm”). In today’s workplace, that would mean having solid career goals and motivation. But how would people in their thirties and forties answer if asked about their career goals and preparation? Nine out of ten would likely be bewildered. Many employees are still questioning their aptitudes and career paths, wavering amid uncertainty rather than future possibilities. “I still haven’t found work that suits me.” “I’ve been working for 13 years and still don’t know what my specialty is.” “How can I switch to a different career?” “Is it too late to rethink my career at forty?” Level Up: A Strong Career offers wavering employees effective ways to set firm career goals and move toward them. Author Shin Hyun-man led CareerCare, Korea’s largest headhunting firm, for more than 20 years and is one of the country’s leading talent experts. Since publishing Three Years After Joining a Company in 2005, he has continued to publish books with insights and messages to help companies and employees advance. After the 2009 mega-bestseller The 1% Secret of People Companies Hold On To sold 400,000 copies, he focused mainly on offering insights to executives.

Many problems people face at work arise because their career goals and paths are unclear. Without a goal, any effort can lose its way. If you just start walking without a plan, you eventually wonder why you are on that road and where you should go. The book describes poor jobs as work with very low intensity or difficulty; simple, repetitive work; jobs anyone can do that do not change with tenure; jobs involving many tasks unrelated to their field; and work done by guesswork. It also says that

“Your workplace will not take responsibility for you for life.” “Set your career goals and career path.” “This is the age when your personal brand can earn money.” Whether you are preparing for a job, hoping to raise your salary, considering a move, aspiring to be an executive, or dreaming of freelancing, this book is written from both the employee’s and business owner’s perspectives. In Q&A form, it discusses the attitudes and ways of thinking each should bring to work and to people. Reading

A personal brand needs recognition from others. Teamwork is an opportunity to show your brand; free-riding is damaging, and brand value comes from working as a team. 🍵 After going through the recent recession, high interest rates, and downturn, my 20-year-old business has changed a lot. The pace of change is uncontrollably fast and lately feels dizzying. I need to stay centered and establish myself while continuing to grow and pursue value-based management. I thought things would get easier
