An excellent book that presents the author’s experience and knowledge through photographs and writing in a way readers can easily understand.
“The present has been placed in my hands, and the future depends on me.” The carpenter’s life, attested to in this substantial book, struck me deeply. Though not a specialist, I bought it. From the foreword, I have enjoyed the sincerity of his life and felt my own fading passion rekindle. I know little about the subject, but it is fascinating. In this busy world, where there is so much to do and money to earn, I want to read more carefully about why the author chose and continues to live this
I saw the thought, insight, and persistence of an author who studies our ancestors’ skills while building, dismantling, and repairing hanok, as if drawing the houses onto a blank page. Above all, I saw the life of a Korean-style carpenter who loves hanok. As a nonexpert in architecture, I happened upon Mok-up and glimpsed hanok’s past, present, and future.
Shin Hyo-seon: mockup
“I offer you my experience and knowledge,” the author writes at the beginning. Master carpenter Shin Hyo-seon includes what he has experienced and proven in the field. While dismantling, examining, repairing, and reassembling many old houses, including Jecheon Cheongpung Hanbyeongnu, Treasure No. 528, he asked how to repair historic buildings properly and found his own answers. Since standards for dismantling and repairing traditional wooden architecture are not established, he created new ones, including an inspection-cycle chart and classification field log. I hope the book guides Korean-style carpenters who face trial and error for lack of standards and who, like him, strive to do their best. He is restoring long-lost traditional techniques and used a patented method he developed to build a new kind of hanok. He says it is impossible to express how moving and weighty it feels that old buildings’ past, present, and future are decided by his hands now. This book presents new possibilities for wooden architecture and mock-ups.
